d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eWed, 18 Nov 2009 12:06:19awesome zombie apocalypse story comic.
And so I aim to coincide that link with the release of this year's Left 4 Dead 2.
As many of you probably also are, I am enthused by post-apocalyptic settings in stories: Fallout 3, Left 4 Deadz, the upcoming 'The Road' movie (Fallout 3 actually drew a lot from the book, so I'll be seeing that for sure). The struggle to survive, how and what mankind degenerates to in that struggle, the desperation and the everyone for themselves environment, fighting for the meager scraps left behind.
dead winter has all of this in shades. It is my favorite story comic. It is the only story comic that I read.
Still on the fence? Try this sample.
I just knocked you off that fence and into a zombie world of awesome.
There are over 250 pages so far, so to help you guys set into the story, I'll break down some of the chapters here. (Some of the pages are NSFW)
Chapters 1-4 Infection begins. Black Monday Blues kicks some ass. Liz and Alice fight through zombie horde.Chapter 5- The gang find shelter.Chapter 6 - Black Monday Blues kicks more ass. We learn about the characters living in the shelter.Chapter 7: Another bounty hunter goes after Black Monday. Gang heads out to find food.Chapter 8: The Army AND city police go after the group (holy shit!). Losing both, the group make their way to the supermarket, though getting in is not going to be as easy as they thought.
So there's my super big plug of deadwinter.Tell Reiley I said 'what up'.]]>

Next, I understand that Google is listing Slackerz as harmful. Last night, a Russian bot/hacker/whatever (I'm assuming it's a bot, since all of my 'index' type files got infected, which there are several) put in a line of code into all of Slackerz' index pages...to download something from a Russian website.
That line of code has been removed from this website.
Google will probably take a while to update this, but the virus has been removed from this site. If you have visited Slackerz in the last 24 hours, I recommend getting your computer scanned.
THIRD: Forums are fixed. I spent two hours trying to fix it after an exhausting trip to Dallas. (so you're fucking welcome, socks)]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMon, 09 Nov 2009 14:04:02Dallas Webcomics Expo this Saturday, November 14th!
The website doesn't say anything about me being there, but that's because I decided on this at the last minute.
Scott Kurtz from PvP is going to be there. The guys from Cyanide and Happiness, Something Positive, Hijinks Ensue, KC Green and about 30 other webcomic creators, including me!
Entry is five bucks. There will probably be a couple webcomics panels too. If you're a webcomic enthusiast and happen to be in the Dallas area, check it out. Details are at DWEX's website at www.dwex.info
For those who can't make it, you know I'll be Twitterin' 'bout it.
I'll be sitting at Chris from Cartridge Comics' table, which is located down at the following map.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eSat, 19 Sep 2009 10:35:05Scribblenauts for the DS, since Ramsoomair sent a link this a-way.
Scribblenauts definitely has its novelty factor. Your Scribblenauts' notepad can summon a lot of stuff. Internet memes are also available, but whatever.
And I'll admit, that sounded very cool to me at first. But I will tell you that the novelty factor wears off after an hour because you find out in that first hour that:
1. You really can't summon everything or even 1/8 of everything. It is surprisingly limited for a game that boasts near-limitless creativity.
2. So you summon everything you would ever want to summon that you can, after trying to summon things that the game won't let you. After 30 minutes of that, what then? The puzzles? I'll get to that in a second.
Try it before you buy because there is a good chance you won't like it. Do not listen to the hype.
You can write in 22,000-something words and have them materialize. But as you play through the game, you realize you only need "Blackhole" (to kill off any enemy, because using a gun to do it in Scribblenauts is like pulling teeth with the frustrating controls) and "wings/rocketpack/helicopter" (to fly over the obstacles) to complete about 95 percent of the puzzles.
Eighty-percent of the puzzles/action mini-games are uninspiring, like a kindergartener's homework. World 1 to World 10 you get puzzles like:
"Feed her breakfast!" (solution: type in "cereal")
"Paint a picture!" (solution: type in "canvas" and "paint")
"Make a romantic dinner!" (solution: moon, spaghetti, flowers, what the fuck)
One common Scribblenauts puzzle that I'm really getting sick of are things like "Get the penguin back to his family! There's an Orca whale in between, but don't hurt it!" The solution is to isolate the predator (put an island over the whale) and lure the token animal (penguin) over with food (a fish). Come ON.
I like how in order to get someone or something to move where you want them to be, it being a cow or a professor of science, you have to throw food in that direction.
"Hey kid, your parents are missing you. Can you just move, like, five feet that a-way?"
Kid: "....."
"Look! Candy! -chucks it- GO GET IT."
Kid: "MMMMMMM. (the default phrase of every character in Scribblenauts)"
Then again, maybe this game was meant for kids, in which case, okay. Because otherwise, unless you're under 10, you're not going to find any fulfillment from solving these puzzles. Yes you can be creative in solving them, but I want the game to make me be creative, to put me in a seemingly impossible situation and have me solve it with lateral thinking.
Lateral thinking that does not involving getting person A its item B back when it's right over there just go get it.
Anyway, if you liked the game (and the game has its merits), glad you got your money's worth. But I feel a little ripped off.
Shoot me an e-mail if you disagree or if you've discovered some cool words to try: theslackerzATgmailDOTcom. ]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eTue, 08 Sep 2009 14:28:04This week's comic has been shaded and edited slightly, for your enjoyment! If you've already read it, read it again, with enhanced HD shaded graphics!!
There has always been a small part of me, in the back of my mind, that has always wanted to make Slackerz into a vidjeo game comic. I neither have the insight nor the talent to make a video game comic that is both original and non-derivative yet I do it anyway.
Because why not? It's the Internet.
My intended theme for this comic was the PS3 price drop courtesy of the new Slim model. The e-mail gag in this week's comic would have come from the "Playstation Defense Force" General, instead of Hepting. But it ended up being the old rehashed "PS3 only has two games hardy har" joke that isn't really true.
I mean they have that other game. Three games.
BADUM TSSH.
Goin' downhill from here.
Anyway, Hepting really did buy his elite three months before they dropped the price. Which really does suck. I don't know why he bought an xbox, let alone an elite. He's not into shooters, so that that would leave...
You guessed it.
Three other games for the xbox.
DO HO HO.
VIDEO GAMES.
Also, this week's comic was edited by Lance Benson! I meant to have credits for him in the comic, but he helped with the writing for this one, which I need.
Incidentally, when I threw in that throwaway 4chan joke about Halo 3's and killing aliens, he edited in "isn't afraid" instead of "doesn't afraid." Which I think is funnier that the kid got the meme wrong yet grammatically correct.
I dunno.
Anyway, new comic next Monday.
LATER. ]]>

I did not anticipate how complicated it would be to manage 20 sketches once. I am very VERY sorry that it has taken this long. I doubt we'll be doing donation sketches again for this reason. So if you ordered one, it's coming. It's just going to take a while.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eFri, 07 Aug 2009 08:49:16New comic about Connecticon is up. Can't update the Current Comic icon or the Facebook group page right now, but it's up.
Connecticon was fun in that I got to meet a bunch of interesting people...in webcomics.
Aside from that, though, it's pretty much all anime at Connecticon. And most of us in webcomics weren't at all interested in the sort of thing. I would say that webcomics took up about five percent of the convention floor, if that. And they were spread out in a sea of animes.
So with animes, you get cosplayers. And with cosplayers, you get that one spandexed cosplayer that forgets to wear a cup. (don't click on that, really don't)
Listen, this week's comic does not NEARLY put enough detail into Freakazoid's crotch that I unfortunately had to see. I called for more detail in the script, but thank goodness Hepting beckoned to decency.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eThu, 06 Aug 2009 20:45:38comic... about Connecticon! Who'd have thought?
Oh yeah, I haven't posted since we came back, but I wanted to thank everybody that showed up. It was really cool actually getting to meet Slackerz readers. Just wish we could have been there longer (or EARLIER).

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eThu, 06 Aug 2009 11:28:32check out this forum thread right here. Things don't get interesting until right around page 3. I'm about to post a ton of pictures plus a couple Connecticon stories as soon as I'm done with this front page post.
Okay time for the links and rigmarole. I regret that I only talked to most of these people for like a second. Hopefully that will change next year (if I go)
First of all, a very huge thanks to George Rohac who corresponded with the webcomic guests during Connecticon and was very helpful and generally cool. I called him "grohac" the first time I met him because my mind is stuck in the Twitterverse. Glad I got to shake your hand, "decider".
Shawn - Halolz: Thanks for the shirt! Your Twitter debt to me has been resolved. I will certainly look into XXXXXXXXXXXXL shirt sizes for you next year. :P
Ramsoomair - VG Cats: Nice meeting you again and your fiance. Keep your phone charged next time! VG Birds strip coming your way.
KC - Gunshow: You've gotta be the nicest guy in webcomics, hands down. Thanks for the sketch. Sorry about that Sunday.
Reiley - Dead Winter: Thanks for the time you put into my sketch and for putting up with my lameness.
Rosscott - System Comic: Glad I got to meet you. Your presence encompasses a huge chunk of the Twitterverse, sir.
8 Bit Theater - Brian Clevinger: Thanks for stopping by the table, Brian. I'm still going talk bad about you on the Internet.
Carter and Paul - Crooked Gremlins.: Thanks for stopping by the table, guys. Wish I could have made it to City Steam, but I did not have access to a car. Something I will rectify next year. I also apologize for my lame jokes.
I also met very super briefly the people from Three Panel Soul,Garanos, Inky-Tea (thanks for the gum!), Shortpacked (sorry I didn't recognize you from earlier, willis), Silly Vamp and probably a fuckton of others so if I didn't get you, I just have horrible memory.
There were a ton of other webcomic guests there that I just did not have the time to interact and network with. Something I regret.
Oh and sorry we missed you Steve. Maybe next year, huh?
And assuming Slackerz is still around by next year, Hepting and I will definitely be there next year.
Alright now I'm going to work on getting this thread filled up with pictures n crap.]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eWed, 29 Jul 2009 09:35:36Connecticon bound this weekend! So pumped you guys.
We're hella busy planning for Connecticon. We apologize, but we must leave you part of what the flyer will be at the con. I wish Hepting had put in the flyer tagline:
Get ready for this jelly, Connecticon.
Here's a big fat info dump on Connecticon.
I will not be at the con until mid-afternoon on Friday. I aim to check out a couple of the webcomics panels and maybe leave a couple flyers at our Artist Alley table. For the most part on Friday, our Artist Alley table will be empty.
Here is the artist alley map. On Saturday, Hepting and I will be at table 12A-B from early morning 'til around 3-ish. We'll have t-shirts and original art for sale. Come by and say hey.
Aside from that table time on Saturday, we'll be free-floating around the con, checking out some of the sights, meetin' some other cool webcomics dudes that will be there, etc.
Since the convention center has wifi, I will most certainly be twittering the entire event under the hashtag #ctcon. Like literally, hour by the hour updates. If you're already following me, you will probably unfollow me by the second day of the con.
That's all I've got. Hope to see you there. ]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eWed, 15 Jul 2009 06:28:38We covered him and his crazy shenanigans in a comic about a year ago.
15+ years ago, games were so small that they could fit onto a single floppy disk. So kids at school (I was guilty of it too, copied myself some Sim City) would/could just copy a game from a school's computer and take it home with them. It was incredibly easy to do, so software companies, represented by the SIIA, were concerned. They distributed an educational music video starring MC Double Def DP and his song was "Don't Copy That Floppy." Really, if you look at it on Youtube, this was a very light hearted video. No scare tactics or anything. They just wanted to be informative, albeit "Don't Copy That Floppy" is incredibly cheesy, which is why I love it.
Fast-forward about 20 years later, SIIA is now going to tackle Internet piracy. They're not holding ANYTHING back for their latest upcoming video, "Don't Copy That 2".
The result is very strange.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eSat, 27 Jun 2009 22:21:59Scott Hepting and Scott Smith will be at Connecticon in one month.
Hepting and I will be there in full capacity at an artist's alley table that Saturday and Sunday, since Hepting's flight lands very late on Friday.
We need a little help coming up with hotel dough. It's a little too late to do a shirt run now, but Hepting says he can bust out some sketches. If you donate $10, Hepting will mail you a pencil sketch of your request --- nothing TOO extravagant and nothing gross. He will deny it and return your money if it's too out of line.
$20 will get you a mailed in pencil sketch AND an e-mailed digital photoshopped inked/shaded version of that sketch. After you donate, e-mail theslackerzATgmailDOTcom what you want Hepting to draw and the mailing address you want the sketch to be sent.
Limiting to 20 sketches. Our goal is $200. Get yours' in quick.
Thanks in advance for the support. Please DO NOT donate more than 20 dollars. We will feel incredibly undeserving and will have to refund back the money. We only need to able to get a roof over our heads during the event.
Hope to see you there!]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMon, 11 May 2009 02:51:23Slackerz comic on the subject. The movie did feel like a fan-fiction come to life on the big screen. An excuse to start over with Star Trek continuity, but not piss off the long time Trek fans. The very concept never sat right with me before I saw it, and it still doesn't (just a little) after I've seen it.
Still, once I was able to put that aside, it did turn out to be an enjoyable movie. Not "this summer's Iron Man" as some people have described it, but still good. The actor playing McCoy was just fantastic; it felt like he was channeling the spirit of DeForrest Kelley himself. Simon Pegg also did a fantastic job as Scotty. Everybody else... they were just there; they didn't particularly impress me. Even Zachary Quinto as Spock (and I LOVE Sylar, man). He was a good Vulcan, I just didn't think he was a great SPOCK.
Still, I don't feel like I wasted my time or money. I just don't see it as a movie that I'll watch over and over.
Oh, and as a side note.... I went with a friend of mine, and we both kinda giggled when Spock made his comment about "once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the answer", because we're both big fans of Douglas Adams' "Dirk Gently" books, and Dirk Gently is a man who doesn't like to eliminate the impossible. ;)
Anyway, comic's still on Wednesday, etc, etc.]]>

Oh, and there was some confusion last time... the characters are meant to be a parody of the video game webcomic archetype in general, not any SPECIFIC webcomic in particular. Hell, Goobs (the comic I worked on before Slackerz) fell victim to most of those webcomic cliches enough times. ]]>

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMon, 06 Apr 2009 09:10:54this was the most interesting news that I got out of this year's Game Developer's Conference. A new Zelda DS game...with Link's vehicle transportation being a train.
At first I thought "A train? So his movement is fixed? Lame." But actually, as IGN points out in its close examination of the trailer, it seems that you can actually draw your own path amidst the fixed tracks, which creates these spirit tracks, I guess. So it is in fact free-form, like the boats in Phantom Hourglass.
The IGN breakdown of the trailer is here in the news post. Enjoy.

Slackerz? It's not all that great.
At least the last couple months haven't been. If you're really interested in getting to know Slackerz, I suggest you start: here and go backwards. At least that strip is "okay" and not really really bad. The latest stuff has been mired by flu and a busy school schedule, so it's not our best work.
That's all I wanted to say.
OH. And to everyone else, next week's comic is going to be early. Check back in on Monday for a new comic. ]]>

Hepting was sick this week so I asked my long time webcomic associate Anthony Bianchi if he could draw one of the scripts I had planned for later. He graciously agreed and this week's comic was the result. I wrote it, Mr. Bianchi drew it.
Good times were had.
As for Rad Chad? Just random character I felt like cooking up. It had been a while since we introduced any new characters. And if Rad Chad is popular with you guys, then I have a back up plan in my head for a female counterpart for Rad Chad. Just let me know in the forums if you liked this week's comic.
Ant has a Twitter account too. Send him a reply.
Hepting and vidjeo gamez are to return next week.
Peace 'til then. ]]>

Edit: Alright, I've received a couple comments that this comic is suggesting that insurance companies are the victim. Totally not what I'm saying. I'm just pointing out how stupid some peoples' expectations are. Insurance companies are this and that, but it's not my intention to portray them as victims. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm afraid this comic is more of an inside joke between my girlfriend and I, which is a horrible webcomic sin I know.
My girlfriend is a claims adjuster at an auto insurance company. So when the insured get into an accident or get injured, they call her.
I live in the Deep South of the United States and dreams of big insurance payouts are an unfortunate part of that culture. There is a common misconception that if you get into an accident, even if it's your fault, you will receive fat stacks of cash. And the TV commercials of Law Firms perpetuate this bullshit.
And being a claims adjuster for an auto insurance company, you get a good hard fucking look at humanity and its greed. People will lie, tell you their life story, claim "whiplash", threaten you and will even stage accidents to get that insurance cash. Not even sure you were in an accident? Fuck it, call the insurance company anyway.
You pay for a certain amount of coverage and the other guy pays for a certain amount of coverage. If another guy hits you, he may only have 5k of liability coverage...not five fucking million dollars.
So now we get to the comic. Save for the end, this actually happened. An uninsured driver hit an insured one...then called the insured driver's insurance company for that cash claiming a "crooked spine" and even playing the sympathy card: "I need the money, my step-dad is sleeping with my sister"...except it was her fault and it's not even her insurance company.
My girlfriend rarely laughs at my Slackerz strips, but when I showed her the script of this one, she laughed pretty hard.
I can settle for that.]]>

But yeah, I took way too many of those ibuprofens to the point where my body wanted nothing to do with it. On top of that, right before I got really sick, I ate a Wendy's meal with old-tasting ranch dressing instead of something, you know, beneficial and healthy.
And while I didn't lose 250 pounds, I did lose 25! So that was cool.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eWed, 18 Feb 2009 14:01:38from some Bungie fan websites.
Just want to get something clear. I'm not anti-feminist. Like. At all. More power to them. They deserve it.
I'm anti-cliche. I'm probably guilty of several cliches in my comics, but I try not to make them obvious. Halo Wars kind of hits on the topic with the subtlety of a sledge hammer.
Sarah Connor from Terminator and "The Bride" from Kill Bill are a few of the many examples of strong female characters that don't do the played "you can't tell me what to do I'm woman hear me ROAR" spiel. You can have a strong female character without this lame preachy crap going on.
Example.
Girl: I'm gonna eat this grape.
Guy: No way, I'm not letting you eat that grape because I make it my business to tell women what they can't do for some reason.
Girl: *rolls eyes* All my life, I've been told that I can't eat grapes. Well guess what? I don't need balls to eat a grape. (standing ovation in the background)
Guh. Give me a break. Just let her eat the damn grape and MOVE ON. What is with men?
See, ladies, I would let you eat so many grapes.
Better believe it.
All in all, Halo Wars wasn't as cliched as described in the comic. I did exaggerate it quite a bit for the sake of the comic.
Anyway.
Feel free to discuss feminism or whatever else with me at theslackerzATgmailDOTcom.

I'm four followers away from an even 200 followers. Will you be my 200th?!!!
Also, I tried out the Halo Wars demo. I would say it's an average game. Nothing fantastic, nothing sucky. I like RTSers, though, so I'll be picking this one up.
If you have an exbawkz and are hooked to the interwebs, download the demo. It's free, so whatever.
I will say one thing: in skirmish and multiplayer modes, the Covenant is WAY WAY more overpowered than the human forces. As in, you can "Zerg Rush" the enemy forces with "Protoss" like units early in the game. Balls. And the Scarab, to use a Derek euphemism, is a MURDER MACHINE. An orbital MAC blast, despite what the ads show, will not take down a Scarab. I got my ass handed to me every time the enemy built a Scarab.
Maybe I just need a better Scarab tactic. I hope they nerf it somewhat when the game is released.
In closing, Fucking Ditto.

That's probably bad considering that I moved the comic off the front page, but I did that for aesthetic reasons -- the huge ass comics made everything else look ooglay.
Soooo...what's up? How was your holiday?
I spent most of it playing Fallout 3. That game has massive replayability. Definitely worth the money. I am definitely pumped about the upcoming Fallout 3 downloadable content. They've got three coming up. THREE. And they said they might do more! Probably based on how well the first three sell. So if you've got the game, when the DLC comes out, you fucking buy that shit.
I've also been playing Left 4 Dead with the Slackerz forumites (Socks, Derek, Bull, Chaos). Since I stopped playing teh Haloez a while ago, my FPS skills have dulled and I suck at it miserably. But it's fun nonetheless.

Yeah.
It strikes me as an attempt for the writers to have their cake and eat it too, by starting over with the series, yet not invalidating 40 years of Star Trek storylines. With all the time-travel/alternate timeline/parallel reality/pre-destination paradoxes that have gone on in Star Trek, it's a wonder that the space-time continuum hasn't simply swallowed itself whole.

That's all you're getting out of the Jedi Temple level. And this is with me taking my sweet ass time. I'm a little disappointed with the shortness of the level. Lucasarts, this is a five dollar dlc. For ten dollars, I expect at least two hours of gameplay. Keep that in mind for future levels.
BUT.
It is a fun level. Especially the first third of the level -- the first part being heavy combat with some really cool enemies (won't say which), second part being a really ugh and gag tedious puzzle and the third part being an okay boss battle which I think could have been handled a lot better.
Summation: If you love the game, you will like the DLC, but might feel a little ripped off. Otherwise, it's not worth it. ]]>

It's good in that I usually don't ever read story comics. I know that zombie apocalypse fever is in the air because of hot new Left 4 Dead vidjeo game that just came out. So this is my recommendation.
You should start here, from the beginning. It'll take you about an hour to read through.
About a year ago, I met the creator at an irc chatroom and told the room that I didn't think much of dead winter at a first glance. Just want to take the opportunity to apologize for that because after getting into it...
It turns out that I was dead wrong about dead winter.
Ba-dum psh!
Seriously, check it out though.]]>

First real attempt at a storyline. Some of you will like it, some of you won't/don't already. Gotta go through with it, though, so just bear with us. It's only four strips.
One problem I'm currently facing is that I didn't set aside enough strips for this storyline. These story strips are huge and they're still not all I want to write. There are more jokes/gags I want to put in and can't because they're already so large.
As many of you have noticed, yeah, it's a Last Starfighter parody.
I'll do the best I can to make everything up to and the 100th strip having some resemblance of something enjoyable somewhat.
Then we'll get right back to the vidjeo game/pop culture references.
I promise.]]>

It's a guest comic from Sean C. He does a comic called Pixel.
I have a much bigger post to write later, including how much I really enjoy Sean C's comic. Sean C has some of the most clever writing I've ever seen in a web comic. It's really good.
But I'm tired as hell now, so I'll tell you guys about it later.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eTue, 14 Oct 2008 23:20:47New comic, everybody. It's about the US government bailing out greedy fucking bastards that couldn't give a shit about people who really could have used the money.
Hope you like our first and probably only political comic. I'd write more about the background, but it would just make me mad. Just search for "bail out" on google.
Edit: I will say this for those not in the know or our younger readers: the tax cut for that Oregon Senator and Smith's PSP are what's called "Pork Barrel Spending." At its best, pork barrel spending helps out local communities but is dishonest. At its worst, pork barrel is corrupt and self-serving. Read more about it from that link. I think it's bullshit. A bill about say proper usage of farm land should not also be about awesome baseball bat savings.

They showcased the upcoming "Play On Wii" titles, Gamecube titles with Wii Motion Control.
Pass.
Super Pass no...Wii Pass.
They had a few first/third party titles to show: Sin and Punishment 2, which looks cool as a rental, Wii Punch Out, which looks awesome but again as a rental, and Conduit, which is a first real attempt from a third party publisher to make a good FPSer. The genre is getting a little tired though, so I have "cautious optimism" with this one. Potential rentals, but nothing spectacular.
The main focus of the event was obviously the DSi, an attempt to merge the DS in with the iPhone/iTouch/iReferToMyselfAsI crowd. This should have been done with the DS Lite. There are no new DS titles of interest coming out and the market is saturated with DS Lites. Why the hell would anyone besides a hardcore Nintendo fan spend 60 more dollars for a DS with features that are okay but you can get something better for less or several dollars more? Not interested at all. And neither were stock holders.
Here's an idea, Nintendo: Mario and Zelda iterations are great, but why not come up with something new? Even with the Gamecube, you had Animal Crossing and Pikmin, two new IPs. What about the Wii?
Those are my thoughts. I hate hating on Nintendo. They've had me as a customer since 5 years old. But I feel them slipping to the lure of the easier casual market. :\
You'll notice a few links up in the right upper corner: the new RSS Feed, the Facebook group with admins Koltreg, Derek and Texas Ninja that send updates on comics and whatnot, and my Twitter. Look into all that shit.
The Slackerz Forums are bustling with activity. We have a Non-Sequitur forum that's just the best thing ever. Games, random threads about crazy shit, roleplaying, you name it. Right now there's an election for the Non-Sequitur Forum President/Vice President/Secretary of Offense that you should follow! Here is the Election Debate. Here is the current party roster.
And there's even a media radio show, DtotheG Report, covering the election:
DtotheG Report, Episode 1: The Non-Sequitor Forum Presidential Election Coverage.Episode 2.Episode 3.
Elections will be held the same time as the U.S. National Elections. Register to the forums and ask the candidates your questions!
That's all for me for the rest of the week. Can't wait for LittleBigPlanet.
Peace until Tuesday.]]>

A lot of these panels were lifted straight out of the old Johnny Turbo comics... at least the poses, anyway.

This seems to be the very first appearance of both Smith and Hepting in the comic. Now they're in every freaking strip these days. Those jerks.
- Smith
----------------
Yup, this is the first comic that I wrote myself. Obviously I had no plan, I just found a starting point and went from there. The narration in the second panel was somewhat inspired by Frisky Dingo, where Xander Crews is talking about "my poor murdered parents!....... who were MURDERED."
And yes, the third robot is a Dalek. Daleks are awesome. If you don't believe me... well, fuck you.

Man, first two Matrix parodies, and now two Zelda comics? Man, Smith. MAN.
:D
Granted, I'm not spoiled on HD graphics yet (the only current-gen console I own is a Wii... and a DS if we're counting portable), but I recently went back to Twilight Princess a second time and played through the whole thing. It took me such an embarrasingly long time my first time through, that I'm not even going to tell you. The second time, I did much more exploring looking for everything... and found NEARLY everything.
I'm not entirely happy with how Midna turned out here. If we ever do another Zelda strip that incorporates Midna, I'll certainly try harder.

Good times.
- Smith
---------------------
This is one of the few that I tend not to think about if I can help it, honestly. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I'm also pretty sure that literally every other webcomic that exists has done a Mac/PC parody. Granted, every single webcomic has also done a "THIS IS SPARTA" joke, but on that one (comic #31), I think ours is at least unique.
And I'm not all that fond of the artwork. I don't know why I tried to make them stick figures, when it would have been far more effective to make them fleshed-out cartoon characters.
Though I AM fond of the wrist-snapping panel.

I don't care if you're Dr. Pepper, which is my favorite drink ever, if you try to sell me your product is a dumb little holiday adversong shit over the radio, I will not be buying ANYTHING from you over the holidays. I drive for a living, so hearing that shit over and over and over again will drive you mad.

----------------------
Here we go, the first OFFICIAL appearance of The Boss character, even though at the time, I wasn't really planning on reusing it. I guess I just loved that character design a lot (he looks far better in later comics). I kinda modeled his basic shape after the Vogons in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, who were in turn modeled after 18th century caricatures of bureaucratic political characters by James Gillray (you can see one here to get a sense of what they looked like).
Also, I don't remember why I used a photoshopped image of a real store rather than just drawing a darned store. I guess I was just trying something different.

--------------------
I'll never forgive Smith for taking out the best joke in the strip. Originally, in the first panel, after the equation thingy, it said "Provide several punches to self in the nuts and SHOW YOUR WORK."
Also, I loved drawing the vague Einstein-like character.

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMon, 27 Nov 2006 00:00:00"Always Put Salt In Your Eyes" in the strip.
I will say here that MC Hamster is my least favorite character but no one will let me stop writing scripts about him. Because for whatever reason, he's everybody's favorite character.
What is everyone's deal?
It's MC Hamster, by far the worst pun off MC Hammer.
Blah.
- Smith
----------------------
We decided to make MC Hamster a little more anthropomorphic than he was in the old comic.... I guess because presumably, he'd be talking more.
Also, for some reason, I partly modeled the director's appearance after Ron Moore, Trek-writer and creator of the current Battlestar Galactica series. I'm not entirely sure why. I just didn't want to do a stick figure for the director, and every time I imagined what this "director" character should look like, I got an image that closely resembled him (with the long hair and goatee).

Oh! And this is the first entry of Matt, Smith and Hepting's "nemesis". Little bit o' trivia for ya there.
- Smith
---------------------
I guess technically, this IS the first appearance of Matt. He didn't have a name at all, and certainly wasn't planned out as a recurring character at this point. We'll surely talk about him more in later strips.
Also, this was before we established cartoon avatars for either of us. (I hadn't decided to use my Goobs character in the comic yet to represent myself.) That's why the "critical analysis of anime" by Scott Smith was being typed by a stick figure in the first panel.

- Smith
----------------------
Say what you want about the lameness of us doing a Matrix parody... but I was a big fan of the wall of broken TVs behind them, particularly the old-timey 1950's one.
Oh yeah, this is another one where Smith changed some of the dialogue after I sent it to him, Particularly toward the end. Also, I KNOW that the comic originally called for a different song, but for the life of me, I cannot remember what it was, and while I have all the original artwork, for some reason, that doesn't include dialogue panels. Oh well, I guess the song is lost forever.

As for the comic, those commercials sure try to paint a pretty picture of Herpes, but it's still Herpes, man.
Get a grip.
Get out of those flowery fields you crazy people.
And wear something other than all white.
Geez.
- Smith
--------------------
To this day, Super Herpes remains my all time favorite piece of artwork done for Slackerz. I think I made him sufficiently hideous.
Also, a side note: the skank-ho was a character design I originally did for a potential freelance job, but they eventually decided not to go with me. So after this script called for it, I figured, no sense in letting a perfectly good skank-ho go to waste.
